How did you find your path as a hair artist and when did it really sink in to commit in making this your profession?
Evette: From a very young age, I have been captivated by the world of beauty. My journey began in 2005, when I found inspiration from MySpace scene queens and later Tumblr girls. Their bold expressions of style and individuality sparked something within me. I started experimenting with my own hair— dyeing it with Hot Topic bleach, using a leg razor to create layers. It was messy and unrefined, but it felt like the most authentic form of self-expression.
Throughout high school and beyond, I found joy in creating unique looks not only for myself but also for friends. I loved putting together creative photoshoots and experimenting with hair and makeup. This passion for beauty and creativity became an integral part of who I am.
However, it wasn't until recently that I decided to pursue my career as a hair artist. The turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic when I took the time to reflect on my life and what truly made me happy. I realized that I had been stuck in a pattern, choosing paths that were easy or financially secure but not fulfilling. It was during this period of introspection that I acknowledged my passion for hair artistry and decided to take a leap of faith.
Starting school was a significant risk, but it turned out to be the best decision I've ever made. Since 2022, I have fully committed to my craft, and I haven’t looked back. Each day in this profession allows me to express my creativity and share my love for beauty with others. I am excited to continue growing in this profession and inspiring others along the way.
I am surprised at how recent that turning point was! Your commitment is backed with very strong action. With all the interest in people seeking you out, what do you feel you have become known for in your art?
Evette: I believe I’m most known for my Vivid work and razor hair cutting. I have a few viral TikTok’s that include different creative vivid I’ve done throughout my career so far!
Ah, no wonder you're frequently working on such long and involved transformations. As you continue your growth, what do you want to do more of and be known for in addition to that?
Evette: I’d just love to get some more edgy looks in. Uncommon hair colors like moss greens and 70s mod tones I think would be sick to do in the future. I'd also love to do more vivid color on curly hair! Color blocks, colored tips and chunky highlights I think would look amazing on that texture!
Always looking for new challenges; I love that! Speaking of new, do you think the hair industry can improve in any areas? If so, where would you like to make such an impact?
Evette: I definitely feel some industry professionals don’t put themselves first and it’s pushed that as a stylist your needs come secondary to clients and the salon they are in. I think many stylists really neglect their own metal and physical health which is incredibly bad for someone’s overall wellbeing. The industry is already headed in the right direction by bringing awareness to topic.
That is very true and also an important checkpoint for everyone in the pursuit of their careers. In your case, for life balance, what other hobbies and skills are you pursuing?
Evette: Outside of work I have a passion for the aerial arts and have been practicing lyra since 2019.
You’ll also find me playing video games and hanging out with my dog. Lastly I have a love for electronic music and you can catch me working some of the biggest music festival across North America.
Oh wow! What's the best festival experience that you worked at and what did you do at it?
Evette: My favorite festival by far would have to be Shambhala in Canada. This festival was so magical; it felt like home and was filled with some of the nicest people you’d ever meet. They put a lot into this event, such as a stacked and diverse EDM lineup, super elaborate stage setups, and great clothing vendors, which is what I do. Alongside hair, I work for a festival fashion brand, traveling and selling merchandise at music festivals all over. For this specific event, it lasted a whole week, so the crew and I camped there, selling our original handmade accessories and clothing to attendees. Once night fell, we all got to explore the grounds, listen to incredible music, and make memories we will never forget.
That sounds incredible and way beyond the usual merging of work and vacation. So, what is your favorite pure vacation that you've had and what is your future dream vacation?
Evette: I have two favorite vacations I’ve had, Puerto Rico and London!
And as for my dream vacation I’d love to travel to Japan. But as of recently I have added Finland to that list. I would love to see the northern lights and take a sled ride by reindeer!
I can't help but think of hair artistry when you mention Japan. What are your thoughts on the work being done over there?
Evette: First thought, AMAZING! I’m truly inspired by a lot of their hair artists and some of their haircutting and coloring techniques are just stunning. I definitely think they are one of the leading influences in our field right now. I'd love to some how go out there and mentor under someone. You know what? New dream vacation: Travel to Japan, learn coloring and cutting techniques, and get to visit the cities and eat great food!
I think you made a new dream vacation for everyone at the salon, lol. This was a pleasure to do and thank you for sharing so much of your personal life. Final question: What is the one thing you want to ensure a new client that books with you understands about you before they sit in the chair?
Evette: The one thing I want every new client to understand before sitting in my chair is that my space is a safe haven for expressing yourself. My journey has taught me the importance of self expression and I believe everyone deserves to feel good in their own skin.
My primary goal is to help you create the dream style you’ve always wanted, whether it’s a bold change or a subtle enhancement. I’m passionate about achieving your vision and want you to leave my chair feeling confident. Your journey to self-expression starts here, and I’m excited to be a part of it!
